From road tunnels to multi-level transport development

The program aims to look back at the development journey of road tunnels in Hanoi , from projects that solved traffic congestion to their role in shaping the capital’s future multi-layered, modern, and sustainable transportation system.

At the live broadcast point at Studio S1, there were two guests: Mr. Luong Duc Thang, Deputy Head of the Urban Infrastructure and Structure Department, Hanoi Department of Construction; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hoang Kien, Head of the Department of Automation in Bridge and Road Design, Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Transport and Communications.

Furthermore, the program connects directly to the Nguyen Trai – Khuat Duy Tien underpass area, a key intersection in a densely populated area, linking the radial axis with the southwestern gateway of the capital. This is a unique intersection in Hanoi as it is organized according to a four-tiered traffic model, including a road underpass, ground-level roads, the elevated Ring Road 3, and an elevated urban railway line.

From the first Kim Lien tunnel, which began construction 20 years ago, to the series of modern underpasses put into operation in recent years, each project marks a step forward and a new way of thinking in urban traffic organization.

Initially, road tunnels in Hanoi were built to address traffic congestion hotspots at high-traffic intersections. However, as urbanization accelerates and the population and number of vehicles continue to increase, the need is no longer limited to resolving congestion at individual intersections. Hanoi is moving towards a multi-tiered transportation model, where traffic space is utilized simultaneously above ground, elevated, and underground to optimize urban land use.
